Letter from the EditorDear DesignShare Readers,
You know how you sometimes hear of a book that you know you should read and you put it on your mental “to read” list, and then months, sometimes years, pass by before someone mentions the book again? For me, one of those books was Alfie Kohn’s “The Schools Our Children Deserve.” I finally picked up a copy this month and could hardly put it down. And just in time for summer, when my reading list doubles or triples.
As the season makes itself more and more evident with seemingly endless road construction and savvy lemonade salesmen and women, it’s a time to reflect on the past year of academic successes and failures. Summer vacation is most students’ and teachers’ favorite part of the year, and by looking at a typical curriculum past about second grade, it’s no surprise why. Summer is a time of investigating, creating, hiding & seeking, gaining independence and playing. Simply put, summer is fun! Take a look at this month’s enewsletter issue for reminders of how to bring that kind of fun back into education and school design.
